Staycation Ideas: Geocaching & Letterboxing

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Letterbox ImageLike a lot of folks, my family is sticking pretty close to home this summer. While we’re not traveling to exotic locales around the globe (does Idaho count???), we still want to have some adventures. We still want to have some FUN!

Now, I’m the first one to promote exploring your hometown. There are always things to do and see you never knew existed yet somehow escape our vision despite being right in front of our own nose.  How about taking the exploration of your hometown to another level? How about taking up geocaching or letterboxing?

The Wave. Google Does It Again.

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Wow. Ok, so I don’t consider myself a tech geek (although I’m starting to find myself more excited over software / gadget releases than I probably should be) but this just made me jump up and down while clapping with glee.

It’s called Wave by Google and the creators are the same brothers that created Google Maps. Google Wave is not out yet- it’s expected ETA is later this year. Wave integrates email, IM, blogs, wiki, forums, mobile and more – all into one general console. And, as in true Google style, it’s super easy to use (lots of drag and drop – good for a knuckle dragger like me). Here’s a video of a presentation at a developer’s conference. Keep in mind, it’s long but watch the first 30 minutes and I bet you’ll be as excited as I am.

As a business owner, I’m really excited at the potential of making communication among the Greenfeet staff much easier, faster and more efficient. Things like editing documents are easier than ever before. It streamlines processes and I believe will help revolutionize the way business works – especially when you have remote staff like we do.

Watch, gawk, then post your thoughts. I’m dying to know what you think!

Open Mouth, Insert Foot. The Art of Conversation

Open Mouth, Insert Foot. The Art of Conversation

Last Friday I provided useful tips for starting an engaging conversation with strangers. It seemed appropriate as I had a heap of parties to attend over the weekend and I knew I’d be meeting loads of new people.  Indeed, I did and the tips came in handy.

One of the best tips when meeting someone new was to ask “What keeps you busy these days?” and I am happy to report it’s a much friendlier way to start a conversation than “What do you do?”.  Well…… here’s an even better tip: don’t take what you overhear in a conversation to be true – especially when you are eavesdropping. To be fair, I wasn’t purposely eavesdropping.  I was filling my glass at the tap and the conversation was happening around me. It was hard not to hear what was being said.  I filled my glass, smiled at the group and quietly walked away without a word. Before I go any further, let it be known that this was my FIRST glass of beer. ‘Nuff said.

Here’s what happened:

Tips for Making Good Conversation with a Stranger

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and if you’re like me, parties and BBQ’s abound. We’ll be hitting three this weekend (my husband was excited when he realized we wouldn’t have to cook for 3 days!) and we will, undoubtedly, meet new people. While I love meeting new folks, have you ever noticed how sometimes its just painful to keep a conversation going with some people? The key is to find common ground. Struggle with ways to find it? Here’s an article from the Huffington Post by Gretchin Rubin. It’s called 7 Tips For Making Good Conversation With A Stranger. Gretchen provides great tips and ideas on how to start an engaging conversation you’ll both enjoy as well as ideas on how to handle it when the conversation dies.

Oh, and be sure to check out her article on how to get through situations when you forget someone’s name. I’ll admit, this happens to me more than it should. In my younger days I was in sales and quick with remembering names and associations. I suck now. I’ve been retraining myself to truly be in the moment and block out everything around me to focus on the person I’m shaking hands with. It still takes me a few encounters to burn someone’s name into my brain. While I’ve learned to be honest with the individual when I forget their name, Gretchen provides some ways to help preserve your dignity. It’s worth the 5 minutes it’ll take to read it.

Have a wonderful weekend. Safe travels for those of you on the move. When you can relax,  post your tips and trade secrets on how to be a great conversationalist. I’m listening.

Greening Up Your Cold

Greening up your cold

Greening up your cold

This is a first hand account of how to green up your cold. As I write this, I’m sitting in my bed surrounded by tissues, tea, and two dogs snoring soundly despite my incessant sneezing and coughing.

So, what do I mean by greening up your cold? Well, as I commented in a previous post, being sustainable is about making choices – that includes choices when you’re in bed with a cold.

1. Blowing & Coughing are good! That’s right. This is your body’s way of expelling the cold/flu virus from your body. Choose your body’s natural ability to fight colds over pharmaceuticals whenever possible. I don’t recommend using cold medicines as they can actually extend the length of your cold as they suppress your body’s ability to heal. Also, did you know that a few known side effects of  cold medicines are elevated blood pressure  and heart rate as well as the jitters?

Instead, treat a cough with herbal tea (or just hot water) with a teaspoon of local honey and a squeeze of lemon. It really does work. If you have to treat the cough, look for natural remedies such as lozenges that help ease a cough without suppressing it. As for congestion and a runny nose? Blow baby, blow!   And here’s where I had to make a choice. I realize that tissues use trees and add to our landfill, however, the idea of hankies during a cold does nothing for me. Now, I’m not a germaphobe, however, the idea of wet, virus ridden hankies lying around for a few days is not appealing to me. Yuk. I have tissues in the  house that contain recycled content (100% to be exact) but my nose is not loving them at the moment. So, I made the choice to pick up some tissues with lotion. Yeah, so shoot me. I don’t get sick often and well, I don’t appreciate looking like Rudolph in April.
