Are you a Linchpin? Greenfeet Found One in United Airlines

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Editor’s note:

This post is courtesy of Greenfeet Web Marketing Manager, Jill Richard.

Jill has been reading the  book Linchpin by Seth Godin. It’s a great book and one the entire staff at Greenfeet.com is devouring.  We have two choices in life – we can be a Linchpin or a cog in the wheel. What’s does it mean to be a Linchpin? It’s about being indispensible. It’s about pushing back against fear and removing  the term ’status quo’ from your vocabulary.  Trust us, its much more fun being a Linchpin. More work, yes, but much, much more fun!

United Airlines has a linchpin – Meet Carolyn.

Have you ever noticed that when you are reading a book or watching a movie you find the same ideas or people popping up in other places. Perhaps you buy a car, like a prius, and now it seems like they’re everywhere.

On my flight home from Greenfeet’s main office in Chico, after an uber productive week, I was trying to finish reading the book Linchpin by Seth Godin. I was really enjoying this section, as he kept referencing airports, airplanes and flight attendants. It was perfect timing. Moments before a little turbulence,  I read the section where he mentions his friend sits back and enjoys the ride during times like these. He knows the likely hood of crashing is so slim. With that in mind, I was able to push my lizard brain back and enjoy the ups and downs.

I continued on to read about how the flight attendants who work in First Class don’t deliver excellent service for the passenger or for the airlines, but for themselves. Now I wasn’t in First Class, but shortly after reading that I noticed Carolyn. One of the flight attendants on my flight with United. She was coming through the cabin collecting everyone’s trash.

What’s so exciting about that? Was it her smile? She does have a great one. No. Was it her vibrant personality? Again she has one, but no. She was going above and beyond her required job. She was implementing, along with her colleagues, a recycling program. She had two bags one for the cans and one for the non recyclable products.

Imagine the amount of waste Carolyn is removing from the landfill. Each flight she’s probably diverting at least 200 cans from the trash. Multiply that by all the flights she’s on. Is this a United airlines policy? Maybe it should be, but no. She and the rest of the crew have taken it upon themselves to do more than is expected. Not because they get paid more or because it makes someone else happy, but because they felt it was the right thing to do. They were doing their job and more. They shared a bit of themselves and this green girl appreciated it. Way to go Carolyn.

Staycation Ideas: Geocaching & Letterboxing

Letterbox ImageLike a lot of folks, my family is sticking pretty close to home this summer. While we’re not traveling to exotic locales around the globe (does Idaho count???), we still want to have some adventures. We still want to have some FUN!

Now, I’m the first one to promote exploring your hometown. There are always things to do and see you never knew existed yet somehow escape our vision despite being right in front of our own nose.  How about taking the exploration of your hometown to another level? How about taking up geocaching or letterboxing?

The Wave. Google Does It Again.

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Wow. Ok, so I don’t consider myself a tech geek (although I’m starting to find myself more excited over software / gadget releases than I probably should be) but this just made me jump up and down while clapping with glee.

It’s called Wave by Google and the creators are the same brothers that created Google Maps. Google Wave is not out yet- it’s expected ETA is later this year. Wave integrates email, IM, blogs, wiki, forums, mobile and more – all into one general console. And, as in true Google style, it’s super easy to use (lots of drag and drop – good for a knuckle dragger like me). Here’s a video of a presentation at a developer’s conference. Keep in mind, it’s long but watch the first 30 minutes and I bet you’ll be as excited as I am.

As a business owner, I’m really excited at the potential of making communication among the Greenfeet staff much easier, faster and more efficient. Things like editing documents are easier than ever before. It streamlines processes and I believe will help revolutionize the way business works – especially when you have remote staff like we do.

Watch, gawk, then post your thoughts. I’m dying to know what you think!

Open Mouth, Insert Foot. The Art of Conversation.

Open Mouth, Insert Foot. The Art of Conversation

Open Mouth, Insert Foot. The Art of Conversation

Last Friday I provided useful tips for starting an engaging conversation with strangers. It seemed appropriate as I had a heap of parties to attend over the weekend and I knew I’d be meeting loads of new people.  Indeed, I did and the tips came in handy.

One of the best tips when meeting someone new was to ask “What keeps you busy these days?” and I am happy to report it’s a much friendlier way to start a conversation than “What do you do?”.  Well…… here’s an even better tip: don’t take what you overhear in a conversation to be true – especially when you are eavesdropping. To be fair, I wasn’t purposely eavesdropping.  I was filling my glass at the tap and the conversation was happening around me. It was hard not to hear what was being said.  I filled my glass, smiled at the group and quietly walked away without a word. Before I go any further, let it be known that this was my FIRST glass of beer. ‘Nuff said.

Here’s what happened:

Tips for Making Good Conversation with a Stranger

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and if you’re like me, parties and BBQ’s abound. We’ll be hitting three this weekend (my husband was excited when he realized we wouldn’t have to cook for 3 days!) and we will, undoubtedly, meet new people. While I love meeting new folks, have you ever noticed how sometimes its just painful to keep a conversation going with some people? The key is to find common ground. Struggle with ways to find it? Here’s an article from the Huffington Post by Gretchin Rubin. It’s called 7 Tips For Making Good Conversation With A Stranger. Gretchen provides great tips and ideas on how to start an engaging conversation you’ll both enjoy as well as ideas on how to handle it when the conversation dies.

Oh, and be sure to check out her article on how to get through situations when you forget someone’s name. I’ll admit, this happens to me more than it should. In my younger days I was in sales and quick with remembering names and associations. I suck now. I’ve been retraining myself to truly be in the moment and block out everything around me to focus on the person I’m shaking hands with. It still takes me a few encounters to burn someone’s name into my brain. While I’ve learned to be honest with the individual when I forget their name, Gretchen provides some ways to help preserve your dignity. It’s worth the 5 minutes it’ll take to read it.

Have a wonderful weekend. Safe travels for those of you on the move. When you can relax,  post your tips and trade secrets on how to be a great conversationalist. I’m listening.
