My Guilty Pleasure: My Keurig Coffee Maker

What is a Keurig Coffee Maker?

Guilty Pleasure: Keurig Coffee Maker

The Keurig coffee maker is a single use coffee maker. To make coffee, you simply put one of the prefilled, premeasured plastic coffee k cups (as they’re called) into the machine, close the handle which punctures the plastic, allowing already hot water to flow through and make a great cup of coffee. Alternatively you can also put in a tea bag, which is what I usually do.

How can you justify using a Keurig while trying to live a green lifestyle?

I’m guessing that if you’re reading this blog, you’re a bit in touch with your green side, and you’re wondering how a girl working at Greenfeet can even remotely fathom the purchase of what seems like a waste creator.  Well, I can and I do. I love my Keurig Coffee Maker.

First of all you need to know a little something about my drinking habits. I don’t drink coffee, though my husband does (about 2 cups a day).  I on the other hand drink about 6  to 8 cups of tea each day. Before purchasing my Keurig, that meant there was about 3 to 5 minutes of heating up my (ancient apartment provided) stove for the water for my tea. With the Keurig, which heats the water in 15 seconds, I am not wasting all the electricity of heating up my stove.

In addition, we purchased a k cup reusable coffee filter which we can fill with loose leaf tea or coffee. It works really well and reduces a lot of the waste. And yes we do occassionally use the single use,  but then we try to buy the organic ones.

So while the Keurig Coffee maker may not be a green product, my husband and I have tried to work convenience and being green into our lifestyle.

    Hmm, very cognitive post.
Is this theme good unough for the Digg?

We lease a Kurig here at work. Though I love the covenience, I have looked for a greener coffee solution. The leasing company will not allow use to use any flavors other than the ones they provide (a very limited few – no organic) and certinly a reusable filter would be out of the question :(
I hadn’t heard of the reusable filter for this machine. If we purchased a kurig instead of leased we could employ this – where would I find the reusable filter?
Also there was brief mention of kerig posibly using a biodegradable cup in the near future, can you confirm?

  4. Jill says:

    Will,

You can find the reusable filter at the Keurig website http://www.keurig.com/. You can also find the different Coffee makers and all of the k-cups there as well.

I haven’t heard anything about them having a biodegradable k-cup, but that would be awesome. Please post something here if you find out more!

While trying to find out more about the Biodegradable K-Cups that Will mentioned, I found this blog entry on the Mountain Green Coffee Site about the k-cups, recycling and working with Keurig to help come up with an eco-friendly solution – What are your thoughts about this information? I am so glad that I stumbled upon your post about the Keurig – and on a green blog, no less! I was also concerned about the Keurig being wasteful when I first read about it. I really liked the concept since I’m the only one in my family that drinks coffee or tea; and I never want more than one cup of coffee. The reusable K-cup is so great for this! I do keep a couple of the one use organic cups on hand for guests that may want something different. But overall, I think the Keurig can be quite green if you using the reusable K-cup. Thank you for the post!

  12. Yeah! K-cups are not the most environmentally friendly products around but they do save us time. So maybe they cancel each other out. Who knows…

  13. Robb says:

I cant live without my keurig, and I agree, it is much more efficient than a regular coffee maker. I drink coffee and tea all through the day at various times. I hate drinking coffee that has been sitting for hours, its nasty. I am spoiled by my keurig, I need a fresh cup every time.

  14. David says:

I turn my machine off at night so it won’t consume power by keeping the power on. I think this is the worst waste of a single serve unit. http://www.einfospot.com/keurig

  15. Susan says:

this has nothing to do with your green comment/subject but more about doing tea. i was going to try using a tea bag in my keurig but in the instructions it said not too – so i was curious if you or any of the others on here have had trouble with doing that. do you just lay it inside the reusable my-kcup? does it clog the unit?

  16. Hi Susan
From what I understand, the unit is not made for tea. You may be able to try it with loose tea – let me k now how it works out!

  17. Hey, we just did a post on this very issue…I say it is ‘green’ because that is my story and I’m sticking to it;) http://bit.ly/naaMQH
