My DIY Earth Month Project - Bottle Cap Table

I’m so excited about my new backyard! My husband Rob and I embarked on our eco backyard makeover last year and had to stop in November due to the holiday rush here at Greenfeet. Well, the sun is shining and we’re back at it and to make it complete, we need your help.

After 8 years of staring at an empty, dirt filled space we are ready to enjoy our backyard. And, since HGTV has yet to respond to our emails for a free backyard makeover, we figured we better do it ourselves. Our goal is to create a functional space where we can entertain, relax and work. We are creating a space that’s eco friendly, family friendly and suitable for our two rambunctious labradors to frolick and wrestle. We also want to invite wildlife such as birds and bees into our backyard.

Greening Up Your Cold

Greening up your cold

Greening up your cold

This is a first hand account of how to green up your cold. As I write this, I’m sitting in my bed surrounded by tissues, tea, and two dogs snoring soundly despite my incessant sneezing and coughing.

So, what do I mean by greening up your cold? Well, as I commented in a previous post, being sustainable is about making choices – that includes choices when you’re in bed with a cold.

1. Blowing & Coughing are good! That’s right. This is your body’s way of expelling the cold/flu virus from your body. Choose your body’s natural ability to fight colds over pharmaceuticals whenever possible. I don’t recommend using cold medicines as they can actually extend the length of your cold as they suppress your body’s ability to heal. Also, did you know that a few known side effects of  cold medicines are elevated blood pressure  and heart rate as well as the jitters?

Instead, treat a cough with herbal tea (or just hot water) with a teaspoon of local honey and a squeeze of lemon. It really does work. If you have to treat the cough, look for natural remedies such as lozenges that help ease a cough without suppressing it. As for congestion and a runny nose? Blow baby, blow!   And here’s where I had to make a choice. I realize that tissues use trees and add to our landfill, however, the idea of hankies during a cold does nothing for me. Now, I’m not a germaphobe, however, the idea of wet, virus ridden hankies lying around for a few days is not appealing to me. Yuk. I have tissues in the  house that contain recycled content (100% to be exact) but my nose is not loving them at the moment. So, I made the choice to pick up some tissues with lotion. Yeah, so shoot me. I don’t get sick often and well, I don’t appreciate looking like Rudolph in April.

A Modern Day Greenie - It's All About Choices

Last weekend, I was enjoying a cold one with my girlfriend in my front yard discussing all things ‘green’.  Over smelling lilacs and admiring poppies, the conversation turned to questions about my commitment to an eco-friendly lifestyle. I was explaining how living sustainably involves making choices and at times, that means choosing to settle for the next best thing.  I remembered a situation I had written about 5 years ago involving whether or not to replace our second car that had been deemed terminal. It illustrates the struggle that even us long-time ‘modern greenies’ go through.  I thought it appropriate to re-post in honor of Earth Month:

Living a sustainable lifestlye, for the most part, has been pretty darn easy. The decision to switch to biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners was easy. Choosing natural personal care products – a snap. Kicking up recycling and reducing my need for stuff? Relatively simple. But a recent situation proved to be the greatest challenge of all; giving up the second car.

The Bad News:

The day is etched in my mind – it was a Tuesday. Our mechanic, Eric, called with the bad news; it was terminal. While my husband and I pondered where to lay old Betsy to rest, it hit us that we were down to one set of wheels. We are definitely a two car family. Our offices are over 15 miles apart and schedules are hectic. Our son needs to get from points A to B (and C, D and E depending on the week). My husband has softball and I have meetings. How are we going to make this sudden change work? Granted, we’d been limping along with one car for the last week but could we sustain it?

Houseplants: The Cure For Indoor Air Pollution

While there are numerous things you can do to significantly prevent  indoor air pollution (we’ll cover that in another post), adding houseplants is something you can do today to reduce the pollution that currently exists in your home or office.

When they were handing out green thumbs, I was too engrossed in my enjoyment of a fine, handcrafted ale to pay attention. For those of you that know me, that should come as no surprise. I regret that now. The green thumb, not the ale.  I never regret a really good handcrafted ale….

I’ve decided to “grow” my green thumb as houseplants do more than add beauty to a space. Did you know they can filter out pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene and other VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) from the air? That’s a very good thing considering indoor air pollution can be up to 100 times worse than outdoor air. The folks over at the EPA have lots of other interesting stats. Currently, the Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor air pollution as one of the top five threats to public health . Given the rise in asthma and other chemical sensitivity illnesses, and the fact that most of us spend 90% of our day indoors, it’s time to take the quality of the air we breathe seriously.
